Ryuichi Sakamoto’s cause of death: How did Ryuichi Sakamoto die?
Ryuichi Sakamoto, a pioneering composer, and producer who was among the first to use electronic production in popular songcraft died at the age of 71.
Sakamoto passed away on March 28 after a long fight with cancer, according to a statement posted on his website on Sunday. “We would like to share one of Sakamoto’s favorite quotes,” the statement read. “‘Ars longa, vita brevis.’ Art is long, life is short.”
The Japanese composer had an unusually diverse career: he was a synth-pop star, a composer of both vast cinema soundtracks and quiet, soothing soundscapes, and a collaborator of musicians such as David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Bernardo Bertolucci.
He was a grandfather of electronic pop music as a member of Japan’s enormously famous band Yellow Magic Orchestra and as a solo artist, writing tunes that impacted early hip-hop and techno.
Sakamoto, who was born on January 17, 1952, grew up in a culturally rich environment; his father was an editor for postwar Japanese novelists such as Kenzaburo Oe and Yukio Mishima. He began taking piano lessons at the age of six and later began writing his own music.
