He continued working locally for a number of years, before joining “Canada AM” in 1973 as a newsreader. He also worked as a weekend anchor, producer, and reporter at CTV. He won several awards for his coverage of the Yom Kippur War and would later become a reporter at “CTV National News”. He was also a National Affairs Correspondent on the show until 1979.
In 1982, Morrison joined the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as a substitute anchor in “The Journal”. He stayed there for four years, also becoming the co-host of “Midday” during this period. In 1986, he moved to Los Angeles to work as a news anchor for KNBC-TV, then two years later, he moved to NBC News and would become a correspondent for the “Today Show” and “NBC Nightly News”. One of his most notable contributions during this time was covering the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, which led to documentaries and magazine segments. In 1992, he returned to Canada to become the co-anchor of “Canada AM”, during which time he also co-hosted the PBS show “The Editors”. However during the 1996 network shakeup, he was ousted.
